Steps to take to trouble shoot a backplane.
- Run the appropriate diagnostics if possible.
- Turn off the system and disconnect the power from the electrical outlet.
- Be sure the controller card is properly seated in the expansion slot.
- Verify that all SAS cables are properly connected between the controller and the backplane.
- Reseat the expansion riser connected to the storage controller.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- Verify that there is hard drive activity by observing the status LED’s on the drives.
- Enter the storage controller’s BIOS to verify the hard drives are being detected. If not then turn off the system and disconnect the power from the electrical outlet.
- Replace all SAS cables leading from the storage controller to the backplane.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- Repeat step 8.
- Replace the storage controller.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- Repeat step 8.
- If no hard drives are detected at this point then the most likely solution would be to replace the backplane.
