Steps to take to trouble shoot a backplane.

1. Run the appropriate diagnostics if possible.
2. Turn off the system and disconnect the power from the electrical outlet.
3. Be sure the controller card is properly seated in the expansion slot.
4. Verify that all SAS cables are properly connected between the controller and the backplane.
5. Reseat the expansion riser connected to the storage controller.
6. Reattach the power and turn on the system.
7. Verify that there is hard drive activity by observing the status LED’s on the drives.
8. Enter the storage controller’s BIOS to verify the hard drives are being detected. If not then turn off the system and disconnect the power from the electrical outlet.
9. Replace all SAS cables leading from the storage controller to the backplane.
10. Reattach the power and turn on the system.
11. Repeat step 8.
12. Replace the storage controller.
13. Reattach the power and turn on the system.
14. Repeat step 8.
15. If no hard drives are detected at this point then the most likely solution would be to replace the backplane.
