Steps to trouble shoot a system board/mother board (This is assuming your system was running at one point, has power and fans are running but shows no POST.)
- Run the appropriate diagnostics if possible.
- Turn off the system and disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Remove all expansion cards from the system except the video card if applicable.
- Reseat all memory modules.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- If there’s still no POST then repeat step 2
- Reseat the all processors.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- If there’s still no POST then repeat step 2
- Remove all memory modules from the system board.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- Listen for any audible beep codes. If there is then a memory module could be the issue.
Replace each module one at a time using the same DIMM slot for each module, reapplying power and attempting the boot process until the faulty module is determined.
- If no beep code is heard then and the system contains two processors then turn off the system and disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet and remove the second processor.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- If there’s still no POST then turn off the system and disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Swap the processor that was removed from CPU socket 2 with the processor in CPU socket 1.
- Reattach the power and turn on the system.
- If no POST, error code or beep code is given at this point, then it’s likely the system board is faulty and needs replacing.
